GlenwoodLOCATION
It is the county seat of Pope County and is located 120 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. It is also set upon the junction of four major highways, numbers: 28, 29, 55, 104; which is 15 miles south of Interstate 94.
SCHOOLS
Minnewaska Area Schools, a consolidated school district, has an enrollment of 1,878 students which includes the elementary schools
in Glenwood, Starbuck Villard and Minnewaska Area High School. The high school students attend a new facility opened in 1991, which houses students grades seven
through 12, on Highway 28 between Starbuck and Glenwood. The Minnewaska Area Lakers are affiliated with the schools of the West Central Athletic Conference
LIBRARY
The newly remodeled Glenwood Public Library maintains a 16,000 volume collection and is part of the Viking Library System.
The library has a large selection of CD's, audio books, DVDs and VHS movies. Library hours are from 1 to 8p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 10a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday
and Thursday, 1p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Frday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
The community serves as a shopping center widely diversified farming area. The Glenwood Development Corporation
promotes new business development in the community, and the efforts have shown new plants and businesses have situated in Glenwood. The city also has a Chamber
of Commerce which works with retail business development and tourism.
AIRPORT
Glenwood has a 4,500-foot paved and lighted way facility with fuel available. It is located on the 1 Cities sectional map 19
nautical miles from the AXN Vor on the 185-degree radial. A new arrival/departure building has also been built at the site.
HOSPITAL
Glacial Ridge Hospital, a licensed 34-bed acute care hospital, is accredited by medicare and the state of Minnesota. It
is rated on e of the finest in the country for hospitals of similar size and mission. Twenty-four hour, seven-day-a-week, emergence care and numberous
specialy services enable the customer to get the care he or she needs locally. The attached clinic, staffed by six physicaians, provides a host of
medical services. All physicians are either board certified or board eligible for family practice. The Glacial Ridge Hospital and Glenwood Medical
Center have just finished a major renovation and expansion project.
NURSING HOMES & ASSISTED LIVING
Glenwood is served by two nursing homes, Glenwood Retirement Village and Lakeview Good Samaritan
Center, which provide 180 beds for the aging. These nursing home offer skilled care, physical and rehabilitative therapy. Ridgewood Villa, and Parkview
Court are independent living and assisted living quarters for senior citizens here in Glenwood.
CENTRAL SQUARE
The old Glenwood High School building was scheduled to be raised until a group of citizens worked with the school
district to save it. The building now is home to seven privately owned condiminiums, an holf dozen businesses, meeting rooms, and a 1,044 auditorium. The
upstairs area is used for weekly art displays and shows.
MEDIAThe Pope Country Tribune, with a circulation of approximately 4,100 is published in here, as well as Glenwood being the host to KMGK - FM, the
local radio station which broadcasts at 107.1 on the FM frequency.
RECREATION
Two golf courses
contribute to the summer fun in Glenwood. On the north side of Lake Minnewaska, the 18-hole Minnewaska Golf Course features watered fairways and grass greens. A
spacious clubhouse is equipped with a dining room. Located on the southeast shore of the Lake is the 18-hole Pezhekee Golf Course. Which is operated by Peter's
Sunset Beach.
Glenwood also has four beautiful parks which serve as meeting places for groups, large and small - from families of two, to conventions of 300
delegates. For summer recreation, tennis course and a campground area are available. There is a municipal beach with soft, fine sand and a block bathhouse.
Within easy reach of Glenwood are Pelican, Reno, Villard, Leven, Amelia, Grove, Linka, Glichrist, Scandinavian and Swenoda lakes, in addition to Lake Minnewaska,
the 13th largest lake in the state. Glenwood also has a newly installed skate park which provides free use for skateboarders and inline skaters; helmets are required.
Softball diamonds, a baseball field, a trapshooting range, and concrete boat launching facilites are also available by the fish hatchery and the swimming beach.
