These Bald Eagles found an easy meal on Lake Minnewaska last Saturday as the lake quickly turned from open water to ice covered and signaled the beginning of the winter season in Pope County. They were the first ones fishing on the ice. Gary Maurstad, who lives on Lake Minnewaska, caught these eagles on Nov. 24 taking turns feeding on the ice. He said at one time he counted about 11 eagles landing on the ice for a chance at the food. Most of the eagles were mature birds, sporting the full colors, but there were a few juveniles among them, letting us know that there was a good hatch for our national emblem, the Bald Eagle.
