Record breaking temperatures mean snowmobile event is cancelled

Record-breaking warm temperatures in February are taking a toll on winter activities.

Due to warm weather and deteriorating lake ice conditions, the local Main Event committee, in collaboration with Pope County Sheriff Tim Riley, decided this week to cancel the upcoming Main Event Hetteen Cup Vintage Snowmobile races.

This is the second consecutive year the snowmobile races had to be cancelled due to lack of snow and deteriorating ice conditions on Lake Minnewaska. The races were to be held on Lake Minnewaska in front of Lakeside Ballroom on March 4 this year.  read entire story. . . .

Central Square is ‘preferred’ city hall site

Central Square was designated as the “preferred site” to locate city hall on a 4-0 vote at Tuesday’s city commission meeting.  Mayor Scott Formo abstained.

As part of the motion, staff and the city’s building committee were directed to continue to negotiate with Central Square and move forward on details, costs and “hard criteria” for relocating city hall to Central Square.

The decision comes just weeks after the city’s building committee had recommended locating city hall in a building owned by Klick Companies.  The commission questioned that recommendation at its Feb. 1 meeting, asking for more details about each potential site, but Tuesday night’s proposal by Central Square representatives convinced city commissioners to favor Central Square as the future location for city hall.  read entire story. . . .

Five injured in head-on crash with Stevens County Ambulance

Five people were injured in a head-on crash with an ambulance Saturday, Feb. 18,  afternoon just east of Glenwood on Highway 28, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.  read entire story. . . .
