Starbuck
POPULATION
 The Population of Starbuck rose from 1,143 in the 1990 census to 1,314 in the 2000 census.
LOCATION
The city is located on the west shore of Lake Minnewaska, at the junction of Highways 28, 29
and 114. It is 130 miles northwest of the Twin Cities.
SCHOOLS
The Starbuck Elementary School has an enrollment of 335 student grades K-6 and is on of the four schools
in the Minnewaska Area Schools District. The Minnewaska Area High School, located four miles east of Starbuck on Highway 28,
opened in 1991 with students from Starbuck, Glenwood, Lowry and Villard enrolled in this joint-effort facility. The high school
enrollment was about 830 for the 2000-2001 school year. The total district, which is a consolidated district, has about 1,500
students. They Rainbow and Rhymes Nursery School is available for children three and four years of age. Classes held in the
Starbuck Elementary School.
LIBRARY
Starbuck is served by the Viking Library System. The bookmobile visits the city every other week.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
The city of Starbuck has an economic development board which assists new businesses in getting started.
AIRPORT
The city has a municipal airport that has a lighted 2,500-foot sod runway.
HOSPITAL
The 19-bed Minnewaska District Hospital was built in 1977. It provides 24-hour emergency care and a
full range of acute care services- medical, surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics and emergency. The Starbuck Clinic is now located
adjacent to the hospital. Both facilitiesare served by two doctors and a physician assistant.
NURSING HOME
The 76-bed Minnewaska Lutheran Home was built in 1960. It is licensed as a skilled facility offering physical therapy.
HOLLY RIDGE MANOR
The new independent living center, which is connected to the Minnewaska District Hospital, offers
20 apartments for senior citizens.
CHURCHES
Seven Lutheran churches serve the Starbuck area and maintain a full schedule of services to residents and
visitors to the community. A community worship service is also held every Saturday eventing at 7 p.m. during the summer months in the commons
area of the Minnewaska Lutheran Home.
MEDIAThe Starbuck Times, with a circulation of approximately 2,100, is published in Starbuck. A new radio station, "The River" 97.3 FM,
went on the air for the first time earlier this year.
RECREATION
 Water recreation dominates activities in Starbuck. The community borders Lake Minnewaksa and has a city park and campgound
adjacent to the shoreline. Boats can be launched from Hobo Park, which is equipped with a newly expanded marina. A replica of a hobo, whic many vistors find
to be an excellent background for photgraphs of themselves on vacation, can be found at the campground. A new addition to the communtity is the Rec
Center. Y.A.AC. ( Youth and Adults Acheiving Community) this serves as a place for kids to go and hang out, while playing the provided recreation. Starbuck
also has lighted softball diamonds, a baseball field and a bowling alley. Glacial Lakes State Park is located five miles south of Starbuck, accessible from
Highway 29. The park has modern and rustic campsites, and a beach areawith a picnic area and watercraft rentals. Boats may also be rented from a local bait shop.
A bar and restaurant and various movie rental businesses provide additional entertainment.
GENERAL BUSINESSES & SERVICES
Starbuck has two motels and two campground facilities, along with the state park, which provides
overnight accomodations for visitors.
Among attraction in the area is the Starbuck Depot, open to visitors by contacting the Chamber of Commerce office. Starbuck is serviced by locally-owned
UHF tower and Midwest Cablevision. Electricity is furnished by Northern States Power, gas if furnished by Minnegasco and telephone service is operated by the
Starbuck Telephone Company. Starbuck's city council meets the second Monday of each month.
